If you’re after a stylish, lightweight cart bag then Motocaddy’s Protekta is well with your consideration. At just 3.1kg, it cuts a sleek silhouette, with waterproof fabric giving it a quality, premium look and feel.

Out on the course we were impressed with just how practical the bag is. The 15-way top with its nine iron slots really works. Our clubs were nice and secure throughout the round and there was little rattling going on, even when we were traversing bumpy ground.

But the Protetka’s functionality doesn’t stop there. The bag features nine pockets in total, with two full-length side pockets, two more for your valuables and a cooler pocket for a drinks bottle. We were able to store our waterproofs with ease alongside the usual essentials. It’s worth noting that the zippers are really high-quality, which given how much they are used can really make - or break - a bag.

On top of this, it features well-placed grab handles, an internal umbrella sleeve and an easy-to-access scorecard holder. The attention to detail that’s apparent across the bag is typified by touches like the groove cleaner on the towel hook.

The Dri Tech bag from PowaKaddy scores highly for its practicality. It's incredibly light for starters, which means it's a breeze to lift. It also benefits from the brand’s Key Lock anti-twist system, which is designed to prevent the bag twisting on the trolley. And during our testing it did just that, with our bag remaining firmly in place throughout all 18 holes.

Then there’s the 14-way divider with a large dedicated space for your flatstick too - even those fitted with jumbo grips. But it’s not just your clubs that have plenty of space. There are seven pockets here, including two full-length options for your rain gear and other clothing. We like how the valuables pockets are velour lined to protect your phone and watch from being scratched or marked.

But the bag’s ultimate protection comes in the shape of its nylon fabric. As the Dri Tech name suggests it's designed to keep your clubs and gear dry; it achieves this thanks to a hydrostatic rating of over 10,000mm. Big Max Dri Lite Tour Cart Bag

If you’re drawn to the looks of a tour bag, then the Dri Lite should have plenty of appeal. Like the bags used by professionals, it has bags of space. There are nine generously sized pockets and we couldn’t begin to fill them all. However, if you're a golfer who likes to carry gear for all eventualities you’ll be covered here, including an integrated cooler pocket. There are also holders for both a towel and an umbrella.

The club’s are easy to access and separated by 14 full-length dividers and another one for your putter. Protection comes in the shape of a water repellent fabric and waterproof zippers. We used the bag during a wet round and it kept the rain out with great success. The fabric is also durable; we’ve reviewed many Big Max bags and the quality is generally high.

Despite the bag’s size, we were surprised at how light it felt, even with the full quota of clubs. To help with carrying though it comes with two well-placed handles and a strap.

Motocaddy 2022 Dry Series Cart Bag

This bag from Motocaddy scored highly thanks to its all-rounder appeal. This is a bag that really does it all well, regardless of your requirements.

As the name suggests, it’s fully waterproof, so ideally suited to wet climates and year-round use. If you’re a golfer who needs plenty of storage it ticks that box too, with nine pockets in total. During our testing we were able to comfortably store our waterproofs, spare balls and other essentials.

The 14 full-length dividers mean your clubs are well-protected, easy to access and don’t rattle around too much either. And if you’re a golfer who appreciates little details, you’ll enjoy features such as the velcro patch that can hold a glove when not in use.

Despite all this functionality the bag is pretty lightweight too, and certainly competitive with many of the other bags reviewed here.

Sun Mountain C-130 Cart Bag

If there was Mount Rushmore for trolley bags, then Sun Mounain’s C-130 would likely be on it.

This is one of the best Sun Mountain golf bags out there and the fact that it’s still being made two decades on from its launch speaks volumes. So what makes this bag so popular?

First up is the wide range of colors on offer. This has been a hallmark of Sun Mountain’s success as golf bag designer, and the C-130 is no different with 11 different options.

Then there’s the plentiful storage. We were suitably impressed with just how much this bag can carry alongside the golf clubs, which are taken care of with 14 dividers and a dedicated putter compartment. The bag boasts 13 pockets, including two just for wet-weather gear and other clothing. The total capacity is so great it’s hard to imagine any golfer running out of space.

The bag is designed for cart use, so it’s a little heavier than some of the bags reviewed here. However, we found that it still fits nicely on a trolley. There are three utility handles as well that really help when you need to lift it from or into your car as well as onto the trolley. The brand’s Smart Strap system is also in play here, which does a good job of keeping the bag securely in place.

Ogio All Elements Cart Bag

While many of the bags here are pretty traditional in their appearance, the Ogio All Elements opts for a more colorful approach. Understandably the bag’s eye-catching aesthetic won’t appeal to all, but its impressive range of features surely will.

Ogio has opted to fit the bag with 15 spacious club dividers, which means you carry your alignment rods with ease. It’s a minor detail perhaps, but does add to the versatility of this bag. As does the choice of 11 different pockets.

You get two spacious side pockets for larger items such as waterproof or an extra sweater. A selection of smaller pockets take care of essentials such as balls, tees and gloves as well as valuables like your phone or watch. There’s also an insulated cooler pocket, which is large enough to store. food and water, and a dedicated umbrella holder.

Given the bag’s name, you’d expect it to handle inclement weather. And during our testing it did. We played in some pretty challenging conditions and our clubs and gear all remained dry. In short we think it's one of the best Ogio golf bags on the market.

Ping Traverse Cart Bag 2022

Ping doesn't just make some of the best clubs around, but also some great bags too. And we think the redesigned Traverse is one of the best Ping golf bags to date.

The first thing you notice is that this is quite a large bag. However, pick it up and you’ll likely be surprised at just how light it is. Weighing just 5.5 pounds it’s a match for many of the best lightweight bags out there without compromising the amount of storage on offer.

There are 11 pockets in total, with two full-length options for clothing as well as those designed for smaller items, such as your valuables. An insulated cooler pocket is fairly commonplace but still appreciated. However, we really liked the compartment that’s designed to hold your rangefinder.

Your clubs are organized via a 14-way top, alongside not one, but two putter wells so have a choice on where you want it to sit in the bag. As for securing it on the cart or trolley, there’s a ‘strap-thru’ pass that’s designed to hold it in place while still allowing access to the pockets.

Motocaddy Pro Series Cart Bag

Unsurprisingly, this Pro Series is a great match with any Motocaddy cart, thanks to the Easilock pins at the bottom of the bag, which are designed to stop it from moving around. However, we found that this design plays just as well with other trolleys and carts too.

There are nine pockets, which, while not as many as some bags reviewed here, is still plenty for all your necessary items, including additional clothing, balls and more. There’s even a dedicated cooler pocket. All of the zippers are high quality; this is mirrored across the bag, including the PU and nylon fabrics that feel really durable. Given the sturdy construction, we’d expect this bag to stand up to regular use without a problem.

Perhaps the standout feature though is how the bag organizers the club. There’s a 14-way divider, with an additional large well for your putter. Each divider is covered in a material that should protect the club shafts. Importantly, the clubs never crossed over during use, a hallmark of a good design. In fact, the only real downside to this otherwise excellent bag is the weight. At 7 pounds, it’s one of the heavier trolley bags we’ve reviewed.

PowaKaddy X-Lite Cart Bag

As one of the least expensive bags reviewed here, you might expect the X-Lite to lack some features found on more expensive options. Not the case. Yes, it lacks the waterproofing of the Dri Tech model, but other than that we found that it performed comparably - and admirably.

Right away, we were impressed with just how light this bag is; it weighs just a little over 5 pounds. This is really noticeable when you have to lift the bag in and out of a car, or onto the trolley itself. However, despite this it feels perfectly robust and has a build quality that belies its price tag. For example, you still benefit from a 14-club divider to organize your clubs.

LIkewise, the amount of storage is comparable to pricier bags. Here you get seven pockets in varying sizes; larger full length side pockets for clothing and smaller options to house balls, gloves, a range finder, a drinks bottle and valuables. Given that it’s not waterproof, you might want to think about placing certain items in a zip loc bag or similar - or perhaps consider using this bag for the summer months only.

MacGregor 15-Series Water Resistant Cart Bag

This is another bag that falls firmly in the lightweight category, tipping the scales at well under five pounds. Combined with its two handles, situated on the top of the bag, and a padded strap it’s a breeze to carry and adjust when fitting it to the trolley.

But its functionality doesn;t stop there. It’s made from a showerproof fabric, with water-resistant zippers throughout and a rain hood. While it might not survive a five-hour round in heavy rain, it’s able to shrug off a few downpours with aplomb.

Those zippers are fitted to nine pockets that are well designed to help you organize all you’ll need for 18 holes. There are larger side pockets as well as smaller ones specifically designed for valuables and balls. There’s an insulated cooler pocket too as well as storage solutions for a towel and umbrella, a pencil slot and velcro patch to hold a glove when not in use. Macgregor has even placed symbols by the pockets to let you know their intended purpose.

The clever organization continues with the 15 full-length dividers, which are lined to protect the club shafts. SImilarly the ‘putter pit’ is rubberized. All in all, this is a super light, practical bag at an attractive price point.

Big Max Dry Lite Sport 2 Golf Bag

The Big Max Dri Lite Sport 2, as the name implies, is fully waterproof. Having reviewed a number of its bags over the years we can attest to the quality of the material used, doing a stellar job of keeping both the clubs and the kit dry.

Talking of kit, this bag can hold some serious volume in its seven pockets. There are two larger options on the side, which can comfortably hold your wet weather gear and extra items such as a sweater or wind jacket. The front of the bag is home to three pockets for larger items, such as a rangefinder or a few golf balls, as well as one for tees and a cooler pouch for drinks and snacks. Then there are two dedicated pockets for mobile phones. I’m not sure who carries two phones on the course, but we found that they also work just as well for gloves.

The storage isn’t the only highlight. The 14-club divider works well as do the bag’s handles. We particularly appreciated the handle on the front; well-constructed with comfortable padding it really helped us when lifting the bag onto the trolley.

Cobra Golf Ultralight Trolley Bag

With a name like Ultralight, you’d expect this bag to be pretty svelte. And at just over 5 lbs it’s exactly that. With the addition of the top grab handles it makes for a bag that’s really easy to move around, whether it's putting it in the trunk of your car or fixing it to the trolley before the round.

The pockets are numerous; there’s 13 in total that cover large clothing pockets, fleece lined small options for your valuables and an insulated cooler pouch. Cobra have equipped the bag with a channel for the cart strap that means it not only secures confidently to the trolley but access to the pockets isn’t impacted.

It’s reflective of the considered design across the bag. We found that the 14-way top worked just as you’d want, with full-length dividers and an oversized putter well, doing a stellar job of organizing and protecting our clubs. Perhaps the only real issue is the bag isn’t waterproof, making it better suited to those warmer months when rain is less likely.

How we test the best golf trolley bags

As with all our reviews, the best golf trolley bags were put through their paces by the Golf Monthly test team. It’s always a comprehensive process that sees us using the products on the golf course to test the manufacturer's claims. With bags that means that waterproofing was tested, whether in an actual shower or by pouring water on the pockets.

It’s vital that our opinions are unbiased, so you can trust that the review is born only from experiences during testing and our knowledge of comparable products . Simply put, brands cannot pay for a good review.

How to choose a golf bag

Before you part with your hard earned money, it’s worth considering what you want and expect from a golf trolley bag. Here are some of the key factors to help you choose the best option for you.

Features - All of the bags reviewed here are heavy on features. But you should consider which of these you value the most. Do you like to carry lots of extra clothing, spare balls and other bits of kit with you? If so, then paying attention to the number, size and position of the bag’s pockets is a good idea. Similarly, if you know that you regularly play in the rain then a waterproof bag, with quality zippers and rain hood will be a sound investment.

Ease of Use - Once loaded with clubs and gear, a golf bag can become pretty heavy. If you need something that’s easy to carry to and from your car as well as to the trolley then look at the bag’s overall weight as well as the handles. In this guide there are several lightweight options that we found to be easy to ‘cart’ about. ‘Easy to use’ also means a bag that secures to the trolley in a straightforward fashion, without compromising access to the pockets.
